Necrobusiness

An extraordinary scandal is retold by this documentary, detailing the bizarre circumstances surrounding Poland’s largest police investigation.

Nine years ago, a tip-off to a national newspaper warned of “skin-hunting”, whereby medical professionals found there was more money to be made from dead patients than live ones.

With the government offering $1,000 in funeral subsidies to grieving families, what started as a simple scam involving duping relatives into signing the money away, took a more sinister turn when doctors, nurses and paramedics began actively hastening their patients’ demise.

The authorities are examining 70 cases of attempted murder, although it’s feared that after 10 years of skin-hunting, some 50,000 people may have fallen victim to its exponents.
